Putnam, CT – One resident was displaced after a fire tore through a single-family Walnut St home Thursday morning.
At approximately 10:58 AM on Thursday, October 10th, 2024, East Putnam’s 1st alarm assignment was struck for a reported structure fire at 225 Walnut St. While units were responding, additional information was received indicating a propane tank had possibly exploded outside the home before the fire.
Upon arrival, units found heavy smoke and fire showing from the roof of a 1.5-story wood-frame dwelling. Initial crews made an aggressive push to the second floor, where the bulk of the fire was, but were quickly forced to evacuate the building due to deteriorating conditions. Crews shifted to an exterior attack for approximately 10 minutes, knocking down the main body of the fire before deploying crews inside to continue attacking pockets of fire.

Throughout the fire, crews utilized a nearby hydrant to supply water to the two apparatus on the scene operating attack lines.
The incident was placed under control at approximately 11:40 AM. The sole resident was uninjured and is being assisted by the American Red Cross. A cat was also rescued from the residence.
The fire is under investigation by the Putnam Fire Marhsal’s Officer and no official cause has been determined at this time.
Agencies that responded included the East Putnam Fire Department, Putnam Fire Department, Attawaugan Fire Department, Thompson Fire Engine Company (Thompson Hill), Dudley Fire Department, Putnam EMS, Putnam Fire Marshal’s Office, American Red Cross, and the Putnam Police Department.
