Pomfret, CT – Five people were transported to Day Kimball Hospital, with one later being airlifted, following a T-Bone collision on Route 44 Friday evening.
At approximately 7 PM on Friday, October 11th, 2024, the Pomfret Fire Department, KB Ambulance (Pomfret Crew), and the Putnam Fire Department were dispatched to the intersection of Pomfret St (Route 44) and Gary School Rd for reports of a multi-vehicle MVA.

Upon arrival, crews found two vehicles, on opposite sides of the Rt 44, with one person entrapped in their car. Several ambulances and a paramedic were requested to the scene as firefighters began extricating the entrapped party. In order to free them, crews had to remove both driver-side doors and the B pillar while contesting with utility poles a short distance away. Crews were able to extricate the man approximately 30 minutes after they were dispatched. The driver was transported to Day Kimball Hospital with serious injuries and later transported by UMass Memorial LifeFlight to UMass Memorial Hospital (Worcester, MA) with serious injuries.
A total of 4 people were transported from the scene with injuries of varying severity.
According to the Connecticut State Police, a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu LT, operated by a 64-year-old woman and occupied by a 61-year-old man and 18-year-old woman from Putnam, was traveling Westbound on Route 44 while a 2008 Toyota Avalon, operated by an 82-year-old Webster man and occupied by 75-year-old Dudley man, was stopped at the stop sign on Gary School Rd. The Avalon attempted to turn left onto Route 44 Eastbound failing to yield the right of way to the approaching Malibu. The Malibu struck the Avalon on the driver’s side in a T-bone manner, causing both vehicles to veer onto opposite embankments. The operator of the Avalon was deemed at fault for the collision and issued a verbal warning for Failure to Obey a Stop Sign (CGS 14-301) before being transported to the hospital.
Agencies that responded included the Pomfret Fire Department, Putnam Fire Department, KB Ambulance, KB Ambulance’s Quinebaug Valley Paramedic (QV Medic), Putnam EMS, Putnam Police Department, Connecticut State Police Troop D, and UMass Memorial LifeFlight.

This a a very dangerous intersection. I lived on Gary School for many years. A driver turning left onto 44E cannot see oncoming traffic! There needed to be a 4 way stop installed.
