According to the Putnam Fire Marshal’s office, an Origin and Cause investigation determined the fire began behind the residence where the homeowner had left an outdoor propane cooker unattended. The cooker ignited nearby combustibles which overheated a 20-lb propane tank causing the relief valve to activate, igniting the building. The fire traveled up the side of the building into the soffit and eaves quickly consuming the second floor and attic.

The homeowner was evaluated for superficial burns to the face and forehead but refused transport to the hospital.
