Thompson, CT — Area first responders raced to contain a chimney fire early Monday morning that had spread into the walls of a home while the homeowners slept.

At approximately 5:22 AM on Monday, December 8, 2025, the Thompson Fire Engine Company was dispatched for a reported chimney fire at 7 County Home Road. As the all-volunteer department made their way out of bed and to the station, Quinebaug Valley Emergency Communications dispatchers received further information and upgraded the assignment to a working fire, striking a first alarm, which brought in mutual aid from all five Thompson departments, East Putnam, and Attawaugan’s Firefighter Assist & Search Team (FAST).

The first officer arrived and reported fire in the walls surrounding the fireplace and chimney. The first fire truck was just minutes behind, immediately deploying a 1 3/4″ attack line with just two members. The initial attack crew discovered the fire had dropped into the basement and was climbing to the second floor and threatening the attic.

As additional companies arrived on the scene, crews gained access to the fire by removing the drywall, allowing the flames to be quickly extinguished. Due to the quick action of the crews on scene, the damage was contained largely to the stairwell and a small portion of the home’s electrical system, allowing the residents to remain in their home after some cleanup.
