Plainfield, CT — Two maintenance workers suffered serious burns Monday morning following an accidental release of steam at a manufacturing facility in the Moosup section of Plainfield. One of the workers remains hospitalized in intensive care, according to the Plainfield Police Department.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. on October 26, 2026, Plainfield Police were notified of a reported boiler explosion at Griswold Products, located at 1 River Street in Moosup.

According to a press release issued by the Plainfield Police Department, responding personnel determined that two maintenance employees had been working on a condensate pump inside the facility when an accidental discharge of steam occurred, filling the immediate work area and causing burns to both workers.

A 26-year-old Brooklyn man sustained severe burns to his chest, hands, arms, and face. He was transported by Life Star helicopter to the Rhode Island Hospital Burn Center in Providence, where police reported he was receiving treatment in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit.

The second employee, a 64-year-old Danielson man, suffered burns to his hands and face. He was transported by ambulance to Backus Hospital in Norwich, where he received treatment before being discharged.

Although the incident was initially reported as a boiler explosion, police determined that the workers were injured by an accidental steam discharge while working on the condensate pump.

The Plainfield Police Department reported finding no apparent criminal activity associated with the incident.

Police subsequently contacted the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Connecticut State Office of the State Building Inspector. Representatives from both agencies responded to the facility and will assume responsibility for the investigation moving forward.

The circumstances surrounding the steam discharge remain under investigation.
