Thompson, CT — Two residential garages were destroyed and a nearby home damaged by a fire Saturday afternoon.

At approximately 3:17 pm on Saturday, November 8, 2025, the West Thompson Fire Department’s 1st alarm was struck for a reported detached garage fire at 379 Riverside Drive.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire consuming one garage, extending into a second adjacent garage, and beginning to melt the siding of a nearby residence. A deck gun was deployed to apply a large volume of water on the fire, but it did little to quell the blaze.

As additional companies arrived, two 1.75-inch handlines were stretched to each garage, where two vehicles were fully involved. Large Diameter Hose (LDH) was laid up the driveway to connect the attack engine to tankers positioned on the roadway.

Once the handlines were placed into operation, firefighters were able to knock down the fire within minutes, preventing the nearby home from catching fire. Crews remained on scene until approximately 5:00 PM to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

The Connecticut DEEP HAZMAT representative was requested to the scene for an unknown quantity of oil and other mechanical fluids that had run from the garage and vehicles onto Riverside Drive. A contract cleanup company has been contacted to handle the spill.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Thompson Fire Marshal’s Office.

Agencies that responded included the West Thompson Fire Department, Community Fire Company, Quinebaug Volunteer Fire Department, Thompson Fire Engine Company (Thompson Hill), East Thompson Volunteer Fire Department, East Putnam Fire Department, Muddy Brook Fire Department, Killingly Rehab Team, Attawaugan Fire Department, Bungay Fire Brigade, and Putnam EMS.
