Stonington, CT — A 52-year-old New Haven man was fatally injured after colliding with a tractor-trailer on I-95. The blue Suzuki Motorcycle was seen minutes earlier fleeing from a bank robbery in Stonington.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 11:20 AM, Stonington Police were dispatched to the Chelsea Groton Bank, 116 West Broad St, for a reported bank robbery. A Be On the Lookout (BOLO) was issued for a blue motorcycle operated by a male with a mask and a hoodie. It was later determined that the man implied he had a firearm, but one was never displayed.
According to the Connecticut State Police, at approximately 11:33 AM on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, Troopers were dispatched to a crash involving a motorcycle and a tractor-trailer on I-95 South near Exit 91. It was determined that a [blue] Suzuki GSX-R1000, operated by 52-year-old Shawn M. Twomey of New Haven, collided with the rear of a 2017 Kenworth Construct T680 operated by a 41-year-old man from New Britain. The impact ejected Twomey from the motorcycle onto the roadway, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Shawn M Twomey was previously found guilty of Robbery 2nd Degree With a Dangerous Weapon and Risk of Injury to a Child following a 2015 robbery of Citizens Bank in East Lyme, as originally reported by The Bulletin.
While officials were currently unable to confirm that the bike and the individual involved in the I-95 crash were associated with the bank robbery, unofficial sources indicated units on the scene had high confidence they were the subject of the BOLO. A local credit union made a Facebook post indicating police had the suspect in custody, allowing them to reopen their locations. That post was later removed for unknown reasons.
This robbery and collision come just over a week after a hometownBank was robbed in Webster, MA by a male operating a blue Suzuki motorcycle. It is currently unclear if this is the same individual.
