Sterling, CT – An elderly woman is in critical condition after being struck while attempting to cross Route 14A Tuesday afternoon.
At approximately 1217 PM on Tuesday, April 1st, 2025, the Oneco Fire Department, Sterling Fire Department, Moosup Ambulance, a Quinebaug Valley Paramedic (QV Medic), and the Connecticut State Police (CSP) Troop D were dispatched to the area of 1104 Plainfield Pike, Route 14A, for reports of a person struck by a vehicle. Quinebaug Valley Emergency Communication (QVEC) dispatchers quickly determined that the incident met the Dispatcher Initiated Auto Launch (DIAL) criteria for an air medical helicopter to be launched. A LIFE STAR helicopter was immediately dispatched to an established landing zone at the soccer field next to the town hall.
According to the CSP, a 2011 Ford Explorer, operated by a 45-year-old Sterling woman, was traveling Eastbound on Plainfield Pike when it struck a 78-year-old Oneco woman attempting to cross the road. LIFE STAR airlifted the Oneco woman to Rhode Island Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A Google Maps search shows a crosswalk in the area, but the State Police did not indicate if the woman was utilizing it at the time of the collision.
