Pomfret, CT – Route 44 in the area of Paine Rd was closed for several hours Thursday night after one person perished in a fiery crash.
At approximately 9:05 PM, on Thursday, March 27th, 2025, the Pomfret Fire Department, Eastford Independent Fire Co., the Connecticut State Police, and medical personnel from KB Ambulance responded to the area of 887 Mashomoquet Rd, Route 44, for reports of a rollover vehicle accident with fire.
Crews arrived on the scene to find a vehicle into the woods on fire with a brush fire spreading. Crews were able to rapidly extinguish the vehicle fire and contain the spreading brush fire at which point they located the sole occupant of the vehicle.
According to the Connecticut State Police, a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek registered to a Willington man was traveling Eastbound on Route 44 when it veered across the double yellow line, through the oncoming lane, and off the opposite shoulder. The vehicle then struck a tree before continuing down an embankment into the woods, where it came to rest on its roof on fire. The lone occupant was fatally injured.
Identification of the occupant and the formal cause of death is still under investigation by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The State Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call Troop D at 860-779-4900.
