Putnam, CT – A 68-year-old Putnam man was fatally injured after being pinned under a vehicle on Route 44 Saturday evening.

At approximately 6 PM on Saturday, November 23rd, 2024, the East Putnam Fire Department and Putnam EMS were dispatched to the area of Providence Pike (Route 44) and Waltham Ave for a car vs pedestrian Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA). While units were en route, Quinebaug Valley Emergency Communication (QVEC) dispatchers received additional information that one person was pinned under the vehicle with serious injuries. An air medical helicopter was requested to the scene but was forced to decline the mission due to aviation weather.

When firefighters arrived on the scene they utilized pneumatic airbags to lift the vehicle off the man, freeing him within approximately 8 minutes. The man was transported by Putnam EMS, with a QV Medic onboard, to Day Kimball Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The operator of the vehicle was transported to Day Kimball Hospital for evaluation.

According to the Connecticut State Police (CSP), a 2019 Ford Fusion, operated by a 58-year-old Webster woman, was traveling Westbound on Route 44 when it struck a 68-year-old man, who was walking along Route 44, with the front right portion of the vehicle.

Route 44 remained closed for several hours as the CSP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad (CARS) conducted their investigation. Anyone who witnessed the incident should contact Trooper First Class Siart #1410 at 860-779-4900.
