Killingly, CT – A man was airlifted after he fell during a climb on Ross’ Cliffs within Old Furnace State Park Sunday evening. Firefighters had to use technical rescue skills and a boat to extricate him from the woods
At approximately 3:30 PM on Sunday, November 24th, 2024, the South Killingly / Danielson Technical Rescue Team, along with KB Ambulance, were dispatched to the area of 81 Ross Rd, Ross’ Cliff, for reports of a person who fell from the cliffs.

A fire officer arrived on the scene approximately 6 minutes later and quickly located a seriously injured recreational rock climber who had sustained a ~30ft fall and landed on rocks. After additional units hiked into the woods, EMS personnel initiated patient care as Technical Rescue Team members used a rope system to assist in carrying the climber down ~200′ down a steep grade to a waiting boat. The climber was further transported directly across the pond to the boat launch where an ambulance with UMass Memorial LifeFlight medical personnel onboard was waiting to transport them to a nearby landing zone. The climber was flown to UMass Memorial Hospital (Worcester, MA) with serious injuries.
Agencies that responded included the South Killingly Fire Department, Danielson Fire Department, East Killingly Fire Department, KB Ambulance, KB Ambulance QV Medic, UMass Memorial LifeFlight, Connecticut State Police Troop D, and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Econ Police.
