Putnam, CT – Following an origin and cause investigation, the Putnam Fire Marshal’s Office has deemed the December 11th fire at 82 Mechanic St to have been accidental in nature.
According to the Putnam Fire Marshal’s Office, the homeowner was alerted to the fire when they heard crackling within the walls and smoke emanating from a bedroom wall. The investigation revealed that the area of origin was the chimney attached to a first-floor wood stove. Due to the chimney being mounted on the home’s exterior, a chimney fire went unnoticed for an unspecified amount of time, eventually igniting nearby combustibles and extending to the rest of the home.
At approximately 11:50 p.m. on Monday, December 11th, 2023 area firefighters were originally dispatched for a reported working fire and found fire on the B (left from front) side of the home which extended vertically through the walls into the attic space. No injuries occurred to responders or civilians during the incident. The American Red Cross assisted three residents.
