Pomfret, CT – A detached garage was destroyed by fire on Saturday afternoon but firefighters were able to save the nearby home just in time.
At approximately 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, December 23rd, 2023 a 1st alarm was struck for a reported detached garage fire at 49 Wolf Den Dr, Pomfret.
According to Pomfret Fire Chief Brett Sheldon, Upon the arrival of C160, the first fire officer on the scene, an update was passed that the garage was fully involved and was possibly extending to the nearby home. The first due engine arrived minutes later and immediately began cooling the home, which had already lost a large portion of its siding on the D (right from front) side. When crews got the home down to an acceptable temperature they shifted to an exterior attack on the garage while separate crews entered the home with Thermal Imaging Cameras (TICs) to ensure the fire hadn’t made its way inside.

Interior crews found no signs of heat inside the home, confirming the initial exterior attack had succeeded in protecting the residence. The garage was far too involved to be saved by firefighters and crews spent approximately an hour overhauling the remanents and extinguishing hot spots. A vehicle which was parked nearby was also damaged.

The fire was held to a 1st alarm assignment with the addition of 3 mutual aid tankers. To get water to the scene, where there are no hydrants, crews established a tanker shuttle from the Loos & Co. property which is primarily designed to supply water to apparatus in the event of a fire in that building.
The homeowners were home at the time of the fire but were able to safely evacuate the residence. There were no injuries to responders or civilians as a result of the fire.
Chief Sheldon finished by thanking all of the mutual aid companies involved stating, “Everyone got here, worked great together like we always do, we got the job done, and everyone stayed safe.”
This incident remains under investigation by the Pomfret Fire Marshal’s Office. While the final findings of an origin and cause investigation for this incident could bring new information to light, a blanket Joint Statement has been released by the region’s Fire Marshal Offices regarding the increased number of fires in recent weeks.
