Putnam, CT — Putnam Police seized cannabis products, kratom and other items from a Providence Street smoke shop Tuesday afternoon while executing a search and seizure warrant issued specifically as part of an investigation into the alleged unlawful sale of cannabis.
At approximately 4:22 p.m. on September 29, members of the Putnam Police Department’s Detective and Patrol Divisions executed the warrant at MJ Smoke Shop, 82 Providence Street. Police were assisted by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) Cannabis Control Division and the Department of Revenue Services (DRS).
According to Putnam Police, the warrant was issued following a lengthy investigation into the unlawful sale of cannabis. Police said the investigation began after the department received complaints from concerned members of the Putnam community.
During the execution of the warrant, police seized quantities of cannabis and cannabis products, along with kratom, that had been prepackaged for sale. Packaging materials, scales, and U.S. currency were also seized.
Kratom is a plant-derived substance made from the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa, a tree native to Southeast Asia. Connecticut designated kratom and its derivatives as Schedule I controlled substances earlier this year, prohibiting their possession, manufacture, sale, and distribution in the state.
The investigation remains active, and Putnam Police said arrests are pending.
