Thompson, CT — Area Firefighters responded to Maddison Ave Monday evening after a resident accidentally drove over a propane connection, causing a large leak.
At approximately 5:35 PM on Monday, July 21st, 2025, the Thompson Fire Engine Company and East Thompson Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to 9 Madison Ave for a reported propane tank leaking.
Upon arrival, crews found a vehicle on top of an underground 500-gallon tank connection with propane visibly shooting out of the tank — neighbors later described a visible haze caused by the leak.
As the apparatus arrived on the scene, firefighters equipped with Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBAs) began cooling the damaged connection with water, reducing the risk of the vapors igniting. With crews required to keep a constant flow of water on the leak, 4 tankers and a water supply engine were requested to the scene to maintain a continuous water supply. The supply engine established a draft from the Thompson Speedway pond, allowing tankers to quickly fill and return to the scene.
The gas company arrived on the scene approximately 2 hours later and was able to secure the leak. The leak later had to be removed to allow for more gas to be vented from the tank, and a longer-term plug was put in place.
The final crews cleared the scene at approximately 9 PM. No injuries were reported during the incident.
