Killingly, CT — No injuries were reported after a fire tore through 80% of an Upper Maple St home Friday night.
At approximately 8:30 PM on Friday, May 9th, 2025, Dayville Fire Company’s 1st alarm was struck for a reported house fire at 931 Upper Maple St. While fire crews were responding, Quinebaug Valley Emergency Communications (QVEC) Dispatchers reported they were receiving numerous calls for a fire in the rear of a home.
Minutes later, Dayville Fire Chief Michael Shabenas arrived on the scene. Chief Shabenas told Quiet Corner Alerts he first saw flames rolling from the A (front) bay window and the homeowner running to safety. After checking the homeowner was okay and all occupants were safely out of the building, he completed his 360 walk around, finding heavy fire from the C (rear) of the building.
Within approximately 5 minutes of dispatch, Dayville and Williamsville companies arrived seconds apart, deploying attack lines simultaneously to the front and rear of the building. Due to the volume of fire, crews conducted a transitional attack, hitting the fire from outside before pushing inside. The 2nd alarm assignment was requested to stage in quarters as crews made their initial attack. With crews successfully making quick progress on the fire, knocking down a large amount of fire within 10 minutes of arriving on the scene, the second alarm was quickly released. Crews worked for approximately an hour extinguishing hot spots.
Several propane tanks on the rear porch were compromised during the fire, forcing crews to cool them as they offgassed their contents to prevent an explosion. Once the tanks were sufficiently cooled they were moved away from the residence and the area where firefighters were operating.
Throughout the incident, crews utilized a hydrant approximately 400’ from the fire building at the intersection of Upper Maple St and State Ave.
All occupants made it out of the building uninjured. The American Red Cross is assisting two adults and two children displaced by the fire. Two dogs were in the residence at the time of the fire; one was rescued by the homeowner, and the second is believed to have escaped during the initial commotion. No responders reported any injuries from the incident.
The fire is under investigation by the Killingly Fire Marshal’s Office.
Agencies that responded, or were staged in quarters, included the Dayville Fire Company, Williamsville Fire Engine Company, Danielson Fire Department, Atwood Hose Fire Company, East Putnam Fire Department, KB Ambulance, Attawaugan Fire Department, South Killingly Fire Department, East Killingly Fire Department, and the American Red Cross.
