Killingly, CT — Quick action from bystanders helped prevent a barn from being lost Saturday night.

At approximately 6:45 PM on Saturday, April 12th, 2025, a 1st Alarm was struck for a reported barn fire at 1220 Hartford Pike, Route 101, in the East Killingly Fire District.

A fire officer from a department outside of the 1st alarm region was passing by as Quinebaug Valley Emergency Communications (QVEC) was receiving the initial calls for the fire. He stopped and confirmed that all occupants were out of the building, and a garden hose was being used to hold the fire at bay.

The first East Killingly Fire Officer arrived minutes later and reported a fire in a 20×30 barn with a vehicle inside. Most of the fire had already been extinguished, and the first arriving crews were able to quickly transition into the overhaul phase — where sheetrock, insulation, and other combustables are removed to fully extinguish the fire. 1st alarm companies began returning to service approximately 20 minutes into the incident, and the damage was largely held to the interior of the barn.
