Killingly, CT – Volunteers from multiple Killingly area fire departments were awoken to reports of a residential structure fire early Tuesday morning. Initial crews quickly stopped the fire from spreading throughout the Quinns Hill Rd home.
At approximately 1:26 AM on Tuesday, February 25th, 2025, a 1st alarm assignment was struck for a reported structure fire at 279 Quinns Hill Rd in the East Killingly Fire District.
The Incident Commander arrived on the scene within minutes and observed a narrow 3/4 mile dirt driveway with over an inch of snow on it. The decision was made to only allow critical apparatus up to the scene. An Engine Tanker was sent up the driveway to make an initial attack as a Stagging Officer, located at the end of the driveway, worked with Command to ensure the next apparatus up the driveway were Tankers or Engine Tankers ensuring the attack crew had enough water to fight the fire while not bottlenecking access/egress. Additional manpower was shuttled to the home in pickup trucks while untasked apparatus staged on the roadway.
As crews entered the front door of the single-story residence, with a walk-out basement, they found a heavy smoke condition but no immediate signs of fire. Further investigation revealed a fire between the basement and the first floor. Firefighters utilized hose lines on the 1st floor and in the basement to quickly extinguish the fire, largely stopping the spread as additional units navigated the driveway.
Crews remained on the scene for approximately 3 hours overhauling, and carefully extricating apparatus from the driveway.
