Woodstock/Thompson — Area firefighters responded to a fire that tore through a garage and outdoor furnace/boiler on the Woodstock-Thompson line Friday night.

At approximately 9 PM on Friday, December 20th, 2024 a 1st alarm assignment was struck for a reported structure fire in the area of 295 Paine District Rd in the Muddy Brook Section of Woodstock. It was later determined the front yard of the residence is 433 Paine District Rd, Woodstock, and the building is at 295 Fabyan Woodstock Rd, Thompson.

Units arrived to find a 20×20 outbuilding, split into an outdoor furnace/boiler and a garage, with heavy fire throughout the structure and a vehicle on fire. Due to the proximity to a residence and barn, a second alarm was immediately requested to ensure enough water and manpower was on the rural scene to protect all exposures.

Crews were able to knock the bulk of the fire down within approximately 30 minutes but struggled to safely access the fire burning in the C (back) of the building. Crews enlisted a resident and excavator on the scene to partially demolish the building enabling access to the fire. Crews were on the scene until approximately 11 PM overhauling the structure and a large wood pile stored within the building.

Throughout the incident, a tanker shuttle ran between the scene and a water supply established at the Roseland Park Rd bridge over Muddy Brook.

According to the Thompson Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire began within the building and extended outward to the vehicle. The fire remains under investigation by the Thompson and Woodstock Fire Marshal’s Offices.

Agencies that responded, or were dispatched, included the Muddy Brook Fire Department, Woodstock Volunteer Fire Association, Bungay Fire Brigade, West Thompson Fire Department, Quinebaug Volunteer Fire Department, Community Fire Company, East Putnam Fire Department, Southbridge Fire Department, Webster Fire Rescue, Eastford Independent Fire Co., Putnam Fire Department, Woodstock EMS, and the Killingly Rehab Team.
