Woodstock, CT — Area Firefighters responded to a fire in a barn with approximately 60 cattle inside Monday afternoon.

At approximately 12 PM on Monday, December 23rd, 2024, the Muddy Brook Fire Department’s 1st alarm was struck for a reported barn at Elm Farm, 151 Dugg Hill Rd, on fire with approximately 60 cows inside.

While en route, Deputy Chief Gugliotti spotted a large column of smoke and struck a second alarm. Upon his arrival, he found a 100’x50′ dairy barn with heavy fire throughout the 1st floor. Personnel on the scene were able to safely evacuate all cows prior to the fire department’s arrival. Two other barns full of hay were at risk of being consumed by the fire. Due to the heavy fuel load within the barns and no hydrants in the region, a 3rd alarm was rapidly struck and tankers from the 4th alarm assignment were requested minutes later.

The first-due crews were able to quickly protect both exposures and hold the fire to half the barn and a side room. Due to multiple lofts having been constructed on top of original buildings, a typical occurrence in New England barns, crews had to work through multiple layers of construction material to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. The fire was placed under control at approximately 1 PM.

Throughout the incident, a tanker shuttle was established between a draft site across from the Muddy Brook Fire Department and the scene. The transit was approximately 1.5 miles each way.

No injuries to humans or livestock were reported during the incident.

The fire is currently under investigation by the Woodstock Fire Marhsal’s Office.

Agencies that responded, or were dispatched, included the Muddy Brook Fire Department, Woodstock Volunteer Fire Association, Bungay Fire Brigade, Quinebaug Volunteer Fire Department, Community Fire Company, Eastford Independent Fire Co., West Thompson Fire Department, East Putnam Fire Department, Putnam Fire Department, Southbridge Fire Department, Webster Fire Rescue, Pomfret Fire Department, Dayville Fire Company, Mortlake Fire Company, Killingly Rehab Team, Ashford Fire Department, and Woodstock EMS.
