Plainfield, CT – The quick action of a homeowner stopped a fire from spreading throughout their home Tuesday morning.

At approximately 11:21 AM on Tuesday, July 30th, 2024, the Atwood Hose Fire Company was dispatched to 44 Grove St for a reported furnace fire. While en route the call was upgraded to a 1st alarm structure fire with reports of possible extension in the basement.

Upon arrival, units found the fire knocked down by a homeowner with a garden hose. Crews stretched a single hose line to wet down the fire and overhauled a small area where the fire extended. The majority of the damage was held to the furnace.

According to the Plainfield Fire Marshal’s Office, preliminary findings indicate the fire likely started in or around the furnace and extended to combustibles in the immediate area.

The homeowner was evaluated by the American Legion (Moosup) Ambulance as a precaution but refused transport.

Agencies that responded, or were dispatched, included the Atwood Hose Fire Company, Mortlake Fire Company, Moosup Fire Department, Central Village Fire Company, Attawaugan Fire Department, American Legion Ambulance, and the Plainfield Police Department.
