Putnam, CT – The quick response from firefighters, and a town employee with a fire extinguisher, kept damage to a minimum when debris/rubbish in an abandoned structure caught fire Monday morning.
At approximately 11 a.m. on Monday, May 13th, 2024, Putnam Fire Department’s 1st alarm assignment was transmitted for reports of a building fire in an abandoned mill-style building at 55 Providence St, the former Metal Mast Marine.
Putnam Police Officers and the Putnam Building Official were the first to arrive on the scene and discovered smoke showing from the upper windows and a small fire in the ~20,000 square foot building. The Building Official quickly utilized a fire extinguisher from his vehicle knocking down the bulk of the fire.
When fire units arrived on the scene an attack line was deployed to extinguish the remaining fire. Crews were able to contain the damage to debris in the building with no apparent structural damage.
Putnam EMS stood by at the scene but was not required to treat anyone during the incident.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Putnam Fire Marshal’s Office.
Agencies that responded included the Putnam Fire Department, East Putnam Fire Department, Attawaugan Fire Department, South Killingly Fire Department, Danielson Fire Department, Putnam EMS, Putnam Police Department, and the Putnam Fire Marshal.
