Woodstock, CT — Three people were injured, one critically, during an ice storm on Tuesday afternoon in Woodstock. The crash was one of approximately a dozen reported across the region as hazardous road conditions developed.
According to the Connecticut State Police, at approximately 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta GLS TDI operated by a 30-year-old Woodstock man was traveling eastbound on Route 171 with his 27-year-old wife, both of whom hold North Carolina driver’s licenses. At the same time, a 2018 Acura RDX operated by a 55-year-old Woodstock woman was traveling westbound on Route 171. For an unspecified reason, the two vehicles collided head-on in the area of 35 Route 171, Little River Plaza.
The Woodstock Volunteer Fire Association, Muddy Brook Fire Department, Bungay Fire Brigade, and Woodstock EMS were immediately dispatched to the crash. While units were responding, Quinebaug Valley Emergency Communications (QVEC) dispatchers determined that the passenger of the Jetta was entrapped.
According to a July 2025 inventory, the Woodstock Volunteer Fire Association, which covers this portion of Woodstock, does not currently carry extrication equipment and relies on the other two departments in town to respond with their equipment in the event of an entrapment. Both departments are automatically dispatched with Woodstock units to car accidents, so there is no delay in response.
Due to the location of the crash, Heavy Rescue 478 from the Putnam Fire Department was also requested for additional extrication equipment. Crews were able to extricate the passenger, load the patient, and begin transport within approximately 10 minutes of the first unit’s arrival, allowing Rescue 478 to be canceled.
State Police confirmed that the passenger of the Jetta was transported to Day Kimball Hospital with serious injuries. The operators of both vehicles were transported to Day Kimball Hospital with minor injuries.
Route 171 remained closed until approximately 9 p.m. while the Connecticut State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad (CARS) conducted its investigation.
