Dudley, MA — Firefighters from multiple Southern Worcester County and Connecticut departments responded late Sunday night to a fire that heavily damaged a 1,500-square-foot metal outbuilding.

At approximately 11:26 PM on Sunday, October 9, 2025, a first-alarm assignment was struck for a reported structure fire behind 6 Tracy Road. At the time, all on-duty Fire/EMS personnel were committed to a medical call, requiring all fire apparatus to be staffed by call-back personnel.

Police officers arrived within about five minutes and reported smoke showing from a large metal building. The officer also reported several small explosions occurring inside. The property owner advised that the structure contained a lithium-ion battery system tied to solar panels and unmixed rocket fuel chemicals stored within. Based on the officer’s assessment, a working fire was transmitted, bringing mutual aid companies to the scene and cover companies to Dudley Fire Headquarters.

Fire crews forced entry by cutting through a large metal roll-up door and began chasing the fire through the structure. During their search, they discovered that part of the building had been converted into a living space for at least one person.

The fire was knocked down within approximately 30 minutes, though crews remained on scene until nearly 2:30 AM overhauling the damaged structure. With no hydrants in the area, several tankers were requested to provide a continuous water supply for firefighting operations.

Two residents were transported to UMass Southbridge with unknown injuries.

The fire remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office.
