Thompson, CT — The Thompson Fire Marshal’s Office has determined the cause of the fire that heavily damaged Mack’s Catering Service, a beloved Thompson restaurant.
At approximately 7:52 AM on Sunday, September 21, 2025, a 1st alarm was struck for a reported structure fire at 773 Quinebaug Road, in the Quinebaug Volunteer Fire Department’s district.
The first fire officer arrived within approximately 7 minutes and reported fire showing from the front of the building, stating there was fire inside and outside of the structure. The fire was quickly contained and extinguished.
A press release from the Thompson Fire Marshal’s Office stated that the fire damaged the building’s front exterior wall and spread into an interior room used for storing restaurant supplies. The storage room sustained extensive heat and fire damage, while a dining room wall was also affected. Heavy smoke damage was reported throughout the building.
A cause and origin investigation conducted by the Thompson Fire Marshal’s Office, with assistance from the Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit (FEIU) determined the fire “started in front of the building at ground level in dry mulch. The fire’s ignition was a result of improper disposal of smoking material onto combustible materials.”
Following the fire, Mack’s received an outpouring of support from the community. The owners have indicated via Facebook that they are exploring options to utilize a food truck and continue their catering services until the location can be reopened.
