Thompson, CT — No injuries were reported after crews discovered a bedroom fire while investigating a fire alarm Wednesday evening.

At approximately 9:03 PM on Wednesday, July 9th, 2025, the Community Fire Company was finishing their monthly meeting when they received a phone call at the station reporting a fire alarm sounding at 17 Floral Ave — it is unclear if a fire alarm company ever alerted the dispatch center.

Upon arrival, crews found smoke showing from a rear window of a 3-story multi-family dwelling, prompting a 1st alarm to be struck. A 1st alarm in Community’s district focuses on Tankers and Engine Tankers from numerous surrounding departments, as well as manpower from career departments in Massachusetts. Over the years, this card has been developed based on daytime manpower issues every volunteer department in the region faces, and a lack of an established hydrant network in Thompson.

Crews quickly deployed a 1.75” hand-line to an upstairs apartment where they found active fire in a bedroom. The fire was located and extinguished within approximately 18 minutes, only requiring about a quarter tank of water.

Even though the fire was quickly handled, a large portion of the 1st alarm was held on the scene while crews verified the fire had not spread to surrounding apartments. With no working hydrants on Floral Ave 5” Large Diameter Hose (LDH) was laid into the scene from a Main St hydrant in case additional water was needed.

The fire is under investigation by the Thompson Fire Marshal’s Office, with the Pomfret Fire Marshal’s Office providing mutual aid support.

The American Red Cross is assisting the sole resident who was displaced.

Author’s Note: Eastern Connecticut is largely covered by volunteer fire departments, which are not staffed 24/7. If you think you have an emergency, call 911, not the fire department directly.

Agencies that responded, or were dispatched, included the Community Fire Company, Quinebaug Volunteer Fire Department, Thompson Fire Engine Company (Thompson Hill), West Thompson Fire Department, East Thompson Volunteer Fire Department, East Putnam Fire Department, Putnam Fire Department, Putnam EMS, Dayville Fire Company, Killingly Rehab Unit, Dudley Fire Department, Webster Fire Department, and the Southbridge Fire Department.
