Sterling, CT – A passerby was able to pull an injured Moosup man from his vehicle just before it erupted into flames Wednesday evening. The man later succumbed to his injuries.

According to the Connecticut State Police, at approximately 6:47 PM on Wednesday, February 19th, 2025, first responders were dispatched to a car vs pole accident in the area of [262] Ekonk Hill Rd. Police indicate a 2007 Nissan Altima, operated by a 42-year-old Moosup man residing on Ekonk Hill Rd in Moosup (approximately a 1/2 mile from the accident scene), was traveling South when it crossed the roadway, exiting the left side, and striking a utility pole. A passerby removed the driver from the vehicle before it combusted, rapidly engulfing it.

The man was transported by American Legion (Moosup) Ambulance to Backus Plainfield Emergency Care Center with serious injuries and flown to Hartford Hospital by LIFE STAR. The man succumbed to his injuries at approximately 5:40 AM on Thursday, February 20th.

The accident remains under investigation by the Connecticut State Police Troop D. Anyone with information should contact Trooper Michael Ivan #808 at 860-779-4900 or michael.ivan@ct.gov.

Agencies that responded to the scene included the Oneco Fire Department, Sterling Fire Department, American Legion Ambulance, Connecticut State Police Troop D, and LIFE STAR
