Killingly, CT – Killingly area firefighters responded to a 1st alarm fire in a detached garage Thursday afternoon.
At approximately 3:05 PM on Thursday, January 2nd, 2025, the South Killingly Fire Department’s 1st alarm was struck for reports of heavy black smoke emanating from a detached garage at 172 Bailey Hill Rd.
When the first fire officer arrived he found heavy smoke showing from the eaves of a single-story detached 2.5-bay garage with all doors closed. He was able to quickly verify that the lone occupant within the residence, approximately 20 ft away from the garage, had safely evacuated the home.
The first due apparatus, Engine 165 (E165), arrived minutes later, knowing an aerial would not be necessary, and took the 100′ driveway. They immediately deployed a hand line to the door of the garage. Crews quickly found the primary door was blocked by contents within the garage and would not be a suitable means of egress as the crew moved interior. Firefighters determined the best course of action was to cut the roll-up bay doors in a triangle allowing crews to freely pass through until they were later taken down.
While attack crews were fighting the fire, Engine Tank 165 (ET 165) and Engine Tank 264 (ET264) supplied water to E165 via a Y valve at the end of the driveway connected to a length of Large Diameter Hose (LDH) laid by E165 on arrival. With additional apparatus in reserve and the initial companies making a quick knockdown, crews were able to handle the fire with the water on the scene.

The bulk of the fire was knocked down within approximately 15 minutes and crews remained on the scene for approximately an hour overhauling. There was no extension to the residence, and no injuries were reported.
The fire is under investigation by the Killingly Fire Marshal’s Office.
Agencies that responded included the South Killingly Fire Department, Danielson Fire Department, East Killingly Fire Department, Mortlake Fire Company, Moosup Fire Department, Attawaugan Fire Department, and KB Ambulance.
