Putnam, CT – Firefighters were able to contain a fire to a 20×20 ft portion of the Connecticut National Golf Club’s Clubhouse after an employee arrived for work and discovered smoke in the basement.
At approximately 5:25 AM on Monday, October 28th, 2024, Quinebaug Valley Emergency Communications (QVEC) received a third-party call stating an employee had arrived for work at the Connecticut National Golf Club, 136 Chase Rd, and discovered smoke in the basement. The East Putnam Fire Department was dispatched to investigate the possible fire. Minutes later, dispatchers made contact with a party on the scene who reported an active fire in the basement. A 1st alarm was immediately struck, bringing in additional departments from Putnam and surrounding towns.

Car 79 arrived on the scene approximately 5 minutes after being dispatched and found fire showing through the B (left from the front) wall of the walk-out basement and flames becoming visible in the 1st-floor window. Four additional tankers were requested to the scene to ensure there was time to establish, and efficiently operate, a water supply and tanker shuttle from the Five Mill River Rd dry hydrant.
As the first due apparatus (ET179) arrived 2.5″ and 1.75″ handlines were deployed to the basement where the initial crew quickly cooled the fire from the outside before making an interior attack. As crews entered the basement hallway flames could be seen rolling over their heads. As additional units arrived on the scene crews were deployed to the first floor where they extinguished hot spots from above, being forced to work around a large hole in the floor where the fire had burnt through.
The fire was placed under control at approximately 6:40 AM and crews remained on the scene until approximately 9:30 ensuring all hot spots had been fully extinguished.
The fire is currently under investigation by the Putnam Fire Marshals Office. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
