Thompson, CT – State Police responded to a Brandy Hill Rd residence Tuesday morning after they received information a person was being held against their will. After nearly a 14-hour standoff with the suspected captive-taker, he was placed in custody.

According to the Connecticut State Police, at approximately 8:01 AM on Tuesday, September 17th, 2024, Troop D received third-party information that someone was being held against their will at 246 Brandy Hill Rd in Thompson.

Troopers responded to the residence and attempted to make contact with the occupant of the residence with no success. While on the scene, Troopers determined the captive and captive taker were in the residence and the suspect was armed with a firearm that was not registered to him.

Specialized resources such as the Connecticut State Police Emergency Services Unit (ESU) Tactical Team (SWAT) were requested to the scene to assist in resolving what had become a standoff with the suspect refusing to exit the home.

At approximately 10:54 PM, over 14 hours after the incident began, the suspect, 39-year-old Derin Labonte of 246 Brandy Hill Rd, exited the residence and was placed into custody. He is held on a $100,000 cash/surety bond for the following charges:

  • Unlawful Restraint 1st Degree (53a-95)
  • 4 x Criminal Possession of a Firearm (53a-217)
  • Threat 1st Degree – Display of a Firearm (53a-61aa(a)(3))
  • Breach of Peace 2nd Degree (53a-181)
  • Interference With an Officer/Arrest (53a-167a)

Labonte was currently on bail awaiting trial for felony larceny charges in Putnam.

The 37-year-old captive was uninjured in the incident.

Throughout the incident, a Putnam EMS ambulance and KB Ambulance paramedic were staged in the area in case this incident resulted in any injuries.
