Putnam, CT – Firefighters were able to extricate 1 person after their vehicle rolled over during a collision in a Walmart parking lot Monday morning.
At approximately 6:59 AM on Monday, August 5th, 2024, the East Putnam Fire Department along with medical personnel from Putnam EMS and a QV Paramedic were dispatched to 625 School St, Walmart, for a 2-car vehicle accident with 1 car rolled over and an occupant trapped inside.
Crews arrived to find a small SUV on its driver’s side with the driver trapped in their seat but un-injured. Crews rapidly stabilized the vehicle using rescue struts and removed the window in an attempt to quickly free the occupant. Due to the design of the vehicle, there was not enough room for the occupant to escape through the windshield so crews changed tactics and began utilizing hydraulic tools to cut the roof. Cuts were made to the passenger side A (Front) pillar and a hydraulic ram was used to peel the roof back several feet enabling the occupant to escape the vehicle under their own power.
Both drivers were evaluated by Putnam EMS on the scene and refused transport to the hospital.
(Updated) According to the Connecticut State Police, at the time of the crash a 2020 Jeep Compass, operated by a 36-year-old Putnam woman, was traveling south in the Walmart parking lot when a 2018 KIA Forte, operated by a 28-year-old Oklahoma man, attempted to turn left striking the KIA and causing it to roll over.
Agencies that responded included the East Putnam Fire Department, Putnam EMS, KB Ambulance QV Medic, and Connecticut State Police Troop D.
