Webster, MA – One person and a pet were fatally injured during a fire in a multi-family apartment building on Webster Lake Saturday night.

At approximately 10:03 PM on Saturday, July 27th, 2024, the Webster Fire Department, along with Webster Police and EMS, were dispatched to 3 South Point Rd for reports of smoke and fire coming from a multi-family structure with multiple occupants possibly still inside.

Upon arrival, Webster Police reported smoke showing from the windows of an apartment building with windows hot to the touch and one disabled person possibly trapped inside.

With the update from the police officers on the scene, a 1st alarm working fire assignment was struck while fire units were still en route. A 2nd alarm was stuck moments after the arrival of the first fire unit.

Fire crews immediately began the primary search of the apartment and removed one victim. The victim was transported to a local hospital where they were pronounced deceased. A cat was also removed from an affected apartment but firefighters were unable to resuscitate it.

Initial crews made an aggressive attack on the fire knocking the fire down in approximately 15 minutes and containing a bulk of the damage to the fire apartment.

With South Point Rd being an extremely narrow roadway, the initial setup of apparatus and Large Diameter Hose (LDH) was critical to fighting the fire had it not been stopped during the initial attack. The second due engine secured water from a hydrant at the top of South Point Rd and laid approximately 450′ of LDH into the scene while leaving room for apparatus to access the driveway of the fire building.

The fire is currently under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Section assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Agencies that responded, or were dispatched, included the Webster Fire Department, Webster EMS, Webster Police Department, Dudley Fire Department, Douglas Fire Department, Sutton Fire Department, Southbridge Fire Department, Charlton Fire Department, and the Quinebaug Volunteer Fire Department.
