Voluntown, CT – A man experiencing a medical emergency struck another vehicle head-on Saturday morning sending himself and two others to the hospital.

At approximately 10:17 AM on Saturday, July 20th, 2024, the Voluntown Vol. Fire Co., Lisbon Ambulance Service, American Ambulance Service Paramedic, and Connecticut State Police (CSP) Troop E were dispatched to the area of 593 Rockville Rd, Rt 138, for a multi-vehicle accident with reported entrapment.

While en route, the State Troopers reported one patient with serious injuries to their lower extremities prompting a helicopter to be requested. The closest air medical helicopter was approximately 1 hour away at the time of the request prompting units to opt for ground transport.

According to the Connecticut State Police, a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited S, operated by a 72-year-old Hampton man, was traveling West on RT 138 when the operator had an “unknown medical condition” causing the vehicle to veer off the North shoulder. The vehicle struck the steel beam guardrail and crossed the median where it struck the South steel beam guardrail finally striking a 2013 Nissan Rogue, operated by a 45-year-old South Hadley, MA man, head-on. A 35-year-old Chicopee, MA woman was also in the Nissan Rogue.

When fire department units arrived on the scene they found all patients to be freed from the vehicle with various injuries.

While the Connecticut State Police indicate all three victims were transported with “suspected minor injuries”, all ambulances transported patients at the Advanced Life Support (ALS) level with paramedics on board.

Agencies that responded, or were dispatched, included the Voluntown Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, Lisbon Ambulance Service, American Ambulance Service, North Stonington Ambulance, and the Connecticut State Police Troop E.
