Auburn, MA – Emergency crews are working to mitigate a battery acid leak on the Mass Pike ramp from I-290 after a tractor-trailer rolled over Tuesday night.

At approximately 11:40 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024, the Auburn Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police(MSP) were dispatched to the Mass Pike (I-90) West on ramp from I-290 for a reported tractor-trailer rollover.

When MSP troopers arrived on the scene they found a truck and trailer on its side with the lone occupant self extricated.

It is reported that the truck was carrying over 600 car batteries which began to leak during the accident prompting a Tier 1 HAZMAT response. The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services defines a tier 1 HAZMAT response as “Hazardous & Risk Assessment”.

In a Facebook post, Environmental Service, Inc., an environmental cleanup contractor, explained that they were brought in to assist in the removal and cleanup of the car batteries and the neutralizing of the trailer before the trailer before it is uprighted.

According to the Auburn Fire Department, the ramp will remain closed well into the morning.

The operator of the truck was transported with unknown injuries.
