Sterling Man Airlifted Following Dirt Bike Crash

Sterling, Conn. – A dirt bike, operated by a 23-year-old Sterling man, was struck by another vehicle causing serious injuries Friday night.

At approximately 8:54 p.m. on Friday, July 28th, 2023, the Oneco Fire Department was dispatched for a car versus dirt bike motor vehicle accident in the area of 1067 Plainfield Pike.

According to the Connecticut State Police, a 2012 Mazda 3, operated by a 21-year-old Colorado woman, was traveling East on Plainfield Pike when it began to turn left into a driveway. At the same time a dirt bike, operated by a 23-year-old Sterling man, was traveling West in a dark portion of the roadway without a headlight. The Mazda struck the dirt bike during the turn causing injury to the dirt bike operator.

While firefighters were en route, Quinebaug Valley Emergency Communications (QVEC) received reports that the rider was not wearing a helmet and had serious injuries. With this update, Dispatcher Initiated Auto Launch (DIAL) criteria were met and a Hartford Healthcare LIFE STAR helicopter was requested. Due to the nearest helicopter being 30 minutes away, at the time of the call, units made the decision to transport the man to Backus Hospital, Plainfield, where the helicopter met them. The man was further transported to an unknown hospital for a higher level of care.

This incident remains under investigation by the Connecticut State Police.
