Pomfret, CT — One person was airlifted with serious injuries following a three-vehicle crash on Route 44 Saturday evening.

At approximately 5:35 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2026, a patrolling Connecticut State Trooper came upon a three-car collision in the area of Mamoquet Road (Route 44) and Drown Road. The trooper quickly assessed the scene and determined there were serious injuries, including one occupant who was entrapped.

The Pomfret Fire Department, Eastford Fire Department, KB Ambulance (Pomfret), a Quinebaug Valley paramedic, and a LIFESTAR helicopter were requested to the scene. The Williamsville Fire Engine Company was also dispatched to establish a landing zone in the area of 24 Mashamoquet Road to facilitate the helicopter response.

Upon arrival, fire crews determined the entrapment was minor, and the injured occupant was quickly removed from the vehicle using hand tools. The patient was transported by KB Ambulance with the paramedic to the landing zone, where LIFESTAR arrived shortly after. The patient was then flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester with serious injuries.

A second patient was transported to Day Kimball Hospital with minor injuries.

According to the Connecticut State Police, a 2025 Kia Carnival operated by a 42-year-old man from Ashford, carrying a 34-year-old female passenger and three young children, was traveling westbound on Route 44 and had stopped at the Drown Road intersection.

A 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan, operated by a 23-year-old man from Pomfret, was traveling westbound behind the Kia and following at an unsafe distance. The Tiguan struck the Kia in the rear-left corner, causing it to cross the double yellow centerline and collide head-on with an eastbound 2020 Hino 268A box truck operated by a 24-year-old man from Pawtucket, Rhode Island, who was accompanied by a 29-year-old passenger.

The operator of the Volkswagen, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained serious injuries. All occupants of the other two vehicles were wearing seatbelts or appropriate child restraint systems and sustained minor or no injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by Connecticut State Police Troop D.
