Thompson, CT — A 56-year-old Thompson man was seriously injured after becoming entrapped in his vehicle following a rollover crash on Sand Dam Road on Thursday afternoon. He was later transported to a Level 1 trauma center by LifeFlight ground ambulance.
According to the East Thompson Volunteer Fire Department, at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 3, 2026, the East Thompson Volunteer Fire Department, Thompson Fire Engine Company, Putnam EMS, and the Connecticut State Police were dispatched to the area of 230 Sand Dam Road for a motor vehicle accident.
Minutes after dispatch, Quinebaug Valley Emergency Communications (QVEC) dispatchers received additional information that the occupant was heavily entrapped, prompting the addition of a Quinebaug Valley paramedic and Engine 479 from the East Putnam Fire Department.
Crews were able to extricate the sole occupant in just under nine minutes. The patient was transported to UMass Memorial Health – Harrington Hospital in Webster by Putnam EMS and the QV paramedic, where he was later transferred to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, a Level 1 trauma center, by UMass Memorial Life Flight ground ambulance. Air medical helicopters were unable to fly at the time due to aviation weather.
According to the Connecticut State Police, a 2021 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, operated by a 56-year-old man residing on Bonnet Avenue in Thompson, was traveling southbound on Sand Dam Road. As the vehicle passed Babula Road, the operator failed to maintain his lane, left the roadway, and entered the yard of 230 Sand Dam Road, where it struck an unattached utility trailer. The vehicle then collided with a tree and overturned.
State Police reported the operator sustained “serious but non-life-threatening injuries.”
The crash remains under investigation by Connecticut State Police Troop D.
Community members have recently reported in local forums that a vehicle matching the description of the one involved in the crash had been observed traveling at high speeds on Sand Dam Road in the weeks leading up to the incident. Police have not confirmed any connection between those reports and the crash.
